Just discovered that the oscillation IS the BFO and
the tone can be varied with the BFO tone control. That
all sounds normal except that the BFO SHOULD NOT BE ON
when the AM/SSB switch is in the AM position.
What is happening is that something is turning the BFO
on when the AVC switch is in slow and medium position
and when the mode switch is in the AM position. That
brings up the next question.....What is the BFO
BEATING WITH to produce the tone in the AM position?
Normally, there is no beat note in the absence of a
received tone or signal. In fact you can hardly tell
when the BFO is turned on when there is no beat note
present. The BFO is beating with an internally
generated carrier of some sort for there to be a beat
note. Can the BFO be beating with itself? And why
would the BFO be turned on in the AM position?
Just thinking out loud....maybe a light will come on
somewhere. 73, John, K5PGW
