I have the later version, the HX-50A.
At $65 is is worth the money. 160 meter operation was
optional (didn't usually come from the factory with
160 meters) and if it does have 160 on it that is a
very good deal. It takes about an hour of warm-up
time before the VFO gets really stable. Puts out
between 75 and 80 watts on 160 and 80 meters and, like
most transmitters starts dropping off as you go higher
in frequency.
There was a 160 meter kit available (I actually found
a full kit and put it in my HX-50A). I uploaded the
instructions for the kit to BAMA several years ago.
The HX-50A manual is actually a supplement to the
basic HX-50 manual and the manual is also available
from BAMA.
It does use a sweep tube in the final. I am in the
Atlanta, Georgia, area right and my mind is blank on
the type of tube, maybe a 6DQ5 but don't quote me on
it. I can look when I get back to Texas tomorrow
evening.
AM operation is not much, about 10 watts output. CW
is OK but I do not usually use mine on CW, only SSB.
Audio reports are excellent (I use a D-104
microphone). Like all separate transmitters that do
not have transceive capabilities you have to learn how
to zero-beat.
It is a filter type SSB generation and the carrier
supression and unwanted sideband supression are good,
not at good as the Collins S-Line but still very
acceptable.
Size is about the same as the HQ-170 size receiver.
Does have the capability of crystal control but you do
have to do some "figuring" out of the actual frequency
of the crystal since it has to be in the same range as
the VFO which is heterodyned like all filter rigs.
Other than that, the rig is much better than any Swan
around but isn't as good as the Collins SSB equipment
nor the Heath SB-Line.

I have an opportunity to buy a Hammarlund HX-50 but I
don't know very much about it. I've looked around on
the internet and there doesn't seem to be a lot of
information available. Anyone used or using this rig,
I'm wondering how the audio sounds. I'm told the rig
works, I have not tried it myself. It's priced at
65.00 and looks very nice but has no manual.
