[Hammarlund] Hammarlund HQ-160 audio

I have noticed the audio on my HQ-145 audio is somewhat thinner than my HQ-140 and HQ-129x. It seems like my 129 has much more low end and a warmer sound. I've never had a 160 to compare the audio with. I have a NC-183(non-d) that has a huge amount of low-end response compared to my other 183's- I haven't had a chance to analyze the circuits but I plan to find what is making the difference.

Gary,

I see the same thing with mine.

The 160 is 1W audio out with a feedback arrangement that is described as
narrowing the audio bandwidth on weak signals. My 129x at 3W out sounds
much better. Maybe it's just a matter of power to drive fast transients
through the speaker.

Compared to my NC183, or SX-62, thier both pretty wimpy, but what great
boatanchors. The q-multiplier works great on the 160. The xtal filter on
the 129x is sweet, and for some reason I havnt fathomed yet it seems to
handle noise better than the others despite the tales of noisy 6ss7's
I've read/heard.

I'm home for my 50th birthday today spending it aligning an HQ-180 I
picked up at a hamfest last weekend, having a great day so far! I have
high expectations for this one.

>I just purchased an HQ-160 to add to the Hammarlund collection here. It is the first 160 that I've had any experience with. I was under the impression that it was grouped right in there with the 100's, 110's, and 145's, in terms of their pleasing audio capability, based on comments that I've seen on the web. I immediately noticed that this one was quite inferior in audio quality to my HQ-100. It is not as bright, and has very little low end. I even subsequently did a popular audio mod, and it still doesn't compare to the 100, which is completely stock. Tubes check good, and were changed out anyway, with no difference noted. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
