Chris, my HQ-180 manual is 23 pages. I've never heard of an 80 page manual
for this rig. You're correct about that epoxy smothered cap. Doesn't jive
with my schematic either. Does your HQ-180 have the factory installed
veriner tuning on the front panel, with the slot depth control just under
and to the right of the top lid? If so, the slot depth has to be properly
nulled. Otherwise, the slot frequency control won't do much of anything.
Also check the slot frequency coil. It's adjustment works in tandem with the
slot frequency control. On page 11 it's labeled "L2" in the photo. Page 14
mentions alignment of "L2", but the parts list and schematic both call this
coil "L3". Obviously someone was asleep at the switch that day. "L3" is a
fixed value and not adustable. Anyway, check for damage or cold solder
joints on both coils, and of course on the two controls themselves. Sounds
like you've got one of those, "I don't know so I'll get rid of it and make
it someone else's problem" kind of rig. Since you've already found some
incorrect wiring, it's possible you'll find some more. You have your work
cut out for you. Parts are available and I'm sure others in the group will
offer some help. You're also right about the HQ-180's performance. Alignment
is a pain on band six but dial readout is excellent and the thing is
sensitive and selective as heck. If you like front-end overload and
"birdies", use one of those whiz-bang digital things being offered these
days. Good luck... Mike.
