Hi pat.
I know what you're talking about concerning those "fake" micas. I think
they might have been called "MicaMolds", or something like that anyway.
They're actually a paper capacitor in a square plastic molding. =20
No, these that I've been replacing are actual micas. The Micas were =
usually
used in RF circuits while the "phony" ones were used for audio coupling =
and
other places where a paper cap might be used. =20
IN FACT, this SP-600 had a few of those critters in the audio section =
and
other non critical sections of the receiver. They were replace with =
Orange
Drops during the re-cap process. The only ones not replaced in this set =
are
used as the line to chassis bypass capacitors and they should be =
replaced
I've seen those capacitors literally blown to smithereens in some sets. =
(In
fact that very problem is a VERY good reason why, for safety you should =
put
a grounded 3 wire power cord on your BA's). =20

Years ago I had a BC-348 that had postage stamp caps with color code =
dots
that looked like mica but were actually paper!
Have you opened one of these caps up to be sure its mica?
Just an improbable thought.
