I don't know if it's a real trend or what, but I seem to notice more
reports of mica cap failures lately. Maybe they're finally reaching their
"half-life". I used to think a well-stored vacuum tube was good forever,
but there are reports of long term leakage as the seal between the glass
and the pins breaks down. I've also noticed some NOS tubes flash briefly
when first put on the tube tester.
These problems were obviated with the later solid state gear by
populating their circuits with high failure tantalums. Ironically, I've
found some pre-WWII military gear, like Scott receivers and AR88's less
prone to this kind of thing. Lower component count, bigger components,
many well-preserved in oil and still work even if seeping a bit. Just
don't be munching on finger food while working on one and be sure to turn
over the oily rags to the hazmat crew (PCB's). Other than that, they're
fine. ;-)
