Bob,

The thing depends on the tar for both heat conduction and insulation. You 
may have reduced amounts of both.

One failure of the SP-600 is leakage in the tar itself: the choke becomes 
leaky and puts an increasing load on the B+ supply.  The "fix" offered in a 
Hollow State news article some years ago to insulate the choke case from 
the chassis and run it that way is dangerous in my opinion.  Don't do that.

I suggest you extract the choke for surgery or replacement, and put in a 
substitute till you can locate a replacement.
