Had this happen once, Cecil, here's what worked: Clean (completely
degrease) the now-round hole in the set screw. I used a small shot of
Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber (1,1,1 Trichlor) but was careful not to use
much, was scared of it eating the plastic). Mix up a little dab of JB Weld.
Dip the tip of the largest allen wrench that will fit in the hole in the JB
Weld. Stick it in the set screw, tape it so it won't move, and come back a
day or two later, say a short prayer while facing East holding an 813, then
crank it out. This worked the one time I tried it, but maybe I was just
lucky. I think how well it works depends on a perfect degreasing job. Of
course, I had to use the shop grinder to get the extracted set screw off the
allen wrench (JB Weld is good stuff), but a slightly shortened allen wrench
was no big deal. Amount of "dab" is important, don't want to epoxy the thing
in there even tighter with overflow. Just enough to fill the gaps between
the flats on the allen wrench and the rounded hole. But if it doesn't work
(assuming you can degrease it without eating the plastic) no further harm
has been done... I have no idea how one would take off the front panel tag.
A heat gun directly on the tag to soften the adhesive seems to me to be the
best idea. Aluminum is such a good heat sink that working from the inside
might not do the trick, and the heat might damage something nearby. Best of
luck.

Subject: [Hammarlund] SP-600 Knob and tag removal help
Greetings,
Anyone have any experience at removing a set screw that has had it's
internal hex shoulders stripped. It is frozen and finally stripped. I had
tried penetrating oils before applying too much pressure, but to no avail.
I am trying to save the knob...it is one of the main tuning knobs.
The only thoughts I have come up with is to enlarge the hole through the
plastic part of the knob between the part you grip and the skirt and use an
easy-out that fits snugly into the opening of the set screw. If successful
the only tell tale would be the cleanly enlarged hole in the plastic....I
guess drilling would be another option....I hate that one though for obvious
reasons.
Anyone have any better ideas that you may have used....
I need to get the knob off to refinish the panel and all the others are
free!
Also....has anyone tried to remove the rather thick aluminum tag that is
glued to the front center of the panel on the VLF version. If you have not
seen one it is about 2" X 2.5" and probably 1/8 th inch thick...it looks
like it was applied much like the metal property tags that many companies
put on their equipment.
I can't imagine trying to strip the front panel with aircraft stripper
without damaging the paint on the tag. Any prying would only destroy the
tag for sure. I thought about maybe heating the panel from the rear ever so
carefully in hopes of softening the glue that holds it in place.
Reattaching it should not be a problem if I can just get the thing off to
allow me to refinished the panel.
Any suggestions would be appreciated....especially how not to do either of
these tasks would probably save me some grief!
Thanks...
Cecil Acuff
