I've also had fairly good luck with Brasso, and, as Boomer says, it takes
several go-rounds.
If the knob is really rough you can also try auto compound or even a pass
with very fine grit sandpaper/emory, then go to the Brasso.
If the knobs have become too porous and the sandpaper isn't working out,
yet another approach is a good grade of paste shoe polish, like Kiwi.
Buff it out well as you would on a pair of smooth finish shoes. Let 'em
set, then buff again. (Spit on 'em if you wanna.) Done right it won't
come off on your fingers. Keep the polish mostly on the front surface.
You really don't need to shine up the fluted edges. The carnauba wax
fills the pits 'n pores instead of removing material as with abrasives.
Lasts a long time as you won't be pounding the pavement and stomping in
puddles as you do with shoes. And, no -- won't smell like a shoeshine
stand after you've buffed them and they set.
There's also that Novus (sp?) polish that comes in three versions that
many swear by, but I've yet to try.
