[Hammarlund] dumb tuning question

hey mike...hammarlund stated that they didn't intend for the hq-180 to have
frequency meter dial readout accuracy. they said if that was the case, there
would be no need for a crystal calibrator. however, the hq-180 is certainly
capable of it if the front end is properly aligned. the trick is to
calibrate the main tuning to the bandspread, rather than the other way
around. say you want to surf the 49 meter band...set the main tuning exactly
on 6mhz. turn on the calibrator and adjust the bandspread until you find the
marker. if the bandspread dial isn't sitting on 100, use the small knob to
the right of the bandspread dial to move the crosshair to 100. then start
tuning the main tuning dial up toward 7mhz. if your radio is properly
aligned, the crystal marker should appear on the main tuning at every 100khz
marker on the dial. if it starts to get off wack after a couple of
megahertz, then you need to do a very careful and patient front end
alignment. i spent about four hours doing mine and the dial reads just about
perfect on all bands. i no longer need the crystal calibrator to know where
i'm tuning. again, the hq-180 is capable of extremely accurate dial readout
if properly aligned. (same is true with my hq-110). there are two magazines
with great shortwave schedules. one is popular communications and the other
is monitoring times. both have websites. have fun...mike
