<< I bought an SP-600 receiver a couple of weeks ago that was factory (or
depot) repainted and professionally stenciled SP-610 over the original
SP-600 engraving on the front panel. The name plate on the panel reads
R-274C/FRR Serial No. 2121 Order No. 3376-Phila-52. The name plate inside
the receiver on the tuning capacitor cover reads SP-600-JX-26 Serial No.
11640. If I understand SP-600 history correctly, the two plates are
consistent with one another and probably indicate the "as-built" version of
the receiver unless they were swapped some time in the past. When the
receiver was repainted and stenciled SP-610, the crystal unit was removed
and "Converter" is stenciled above the hole for the "Xtals" control. In
addition, the dial lock control has been removed and that hole is stenciled
"AM" and "Sideband". The original engraving for the crystal unit and dial
lock controls can be seen under the gray paint. I am assuming that this
modification was the addition of a sideband converter, unfortunately the
converter is missing. I haven't been able to find any information on the
internet concerning an SP-610 variant. Does anyone have any information
concerning this variation/modification?
Thanks and 73,

Probably "mismarked" by a uninformed GI. The removal of the FCU (Frequency
Control Unit) was a common modification. I have had a few pass through my
hands like that. The ssb mod is not a military modification though. Usually
the tuning lock was removed an a if gain potentiometer was installed in it's
place.
