" As previously mentioned, the 4.xx =E2=80=93 7.85 Mhz band suddenly=
went=20
dead. I discovered that I restore the signal if I connected the antenna=20
directly to one of the RF coils so it might just be a dirty gang switch. Thi=
s=20
weekends project is to clean the switch up with Deoxit. This stuff seems to=20
do a nice job. In the event that one of these coils is =E2=80=9Copen=E2=80=
=9D, does anyone=20
have an HQ-180 that they are selling off piece by piece?"
Don't despair over the possibility that the coil is open. I've had two open=
=20
coils and both turned out to be very easy to fix, because the break was=20
obvious once I took the cover off. This is not just coincidence. Often, th=
e=20
reason a coil opens is overheating. This is less likely to happen deep=20
inside the turns, because the surrounding turns act as a heat sink. It=20
happens where a single strand of wire runs by itself from the coil to a=20
solder lug. It's easy to spot and easy to fix. So if the Deoxit doesn't=20
work, open up the can and take a look.
Hope this helps.
