Greetings Stephen and group,
I would recommend going to
http://users.erols.com/eengineer/hammar.html and getting one of his CD's
with the Manuals and schematics. It is real nice! I would also recommend
one of the various guys that reprint manuals for the SP-600 series. W7FG is
one, there are several....if you do a search on Ebay (sorry about that) for
SP-600 you will usually find several manuals being listed from a few of
these guys. You don't have to do the auction thing...just contact one of
the guys directly and they will sell you what you need. Original manuals
are hard to find....I'd love to find one myself! The next step is going to
be to order a bunch of ceramic disk and Orange Drop caps to replace all the
black tubulars you find on the underside and in the turret! Check out
http://www.hammarlund.info/ for recapping info! Those are the first
steps... then a nice variac to bring up the power very slowly is handy. See
if it will play. Actually if you are not used to doing these types of recap
jobs it is recommended by some to try the radio on the variac before you
start the racap job...watching for smoke of course. That will establish a
baseline....then replace several caps in one area and retest to be sure you
have not introduced any new problems...then move on to a new area. I can
see where this would build confidence. It's quite a job!
Others will no doubt have recommendations. There is also a very nice video
of how to redo an SP-600 done by Chuck Rippel of R-390A fame. It is very
helpful....I just don't know where to recommend it be purchased...maybe
someone else can shed some light on that!
Hope that helps a little!
Cecil...
