Hi Stephen... there are two primary areas that ought to be worked on.

First, replace ALL the infamous "Black Beauties" (the black Sprague 
capacitors found throughout the receiver.) They should be replaced with 
630V "Orange Drops" available from Antique Electronics Supply 
<http://www.tubesandmore.com/> and others. SOME of them are replaceable 
with 'regular' ceramic discs. I will say that, in my late model 
SP-600-JX-17, they are almost all discs (and these are factory-originals) 
... so Hammarlund felt discs were mostly enough. Personally, I'd use 
'Orange Drops' mostly (or even totally) just because you don't have to then 
figure out whether stability is an issue for each cap. The hardest part of 
this is that the RF turret must be removed because there are some within 
the RF section(s).

The second part is more obvious: tube checking/replacement, followed by a 
complete realignment.
