Hello,
A friend is restoring a Hammarlund HQ-110A-VHF that I recently found at a
tag (garage) sale. We both have noticed that it looks different than
others we have seen in books. The difference is that the faceplate is
painted with "HAMMARLUND-HQ110A" just above the tuning and band
knobs. This is paint on the plate, not the raised letters that are cast
into other radios.
While he was cleaning the smoke residue off the faceplate, he noticed that
there was an imperfection. Where the faceplate was normally made with the
raised HAMMARLUND letters on other versions of this radio, there was faint
grinding marks under the original paint. The paint and lettering all
appear to be original on the faceplate.
The detective work began.....
This is our best guess as to what happened. We have come to the conclusion
that the faceplate was originally for a HAMMARLUND HQ110. The size and
shape of the ground off area looks like the HAMMARLUND HQ110 was ground off
flat with the faceplate surface. The panel was then painted at the factory
and "HAMMARLUND-HQ110A" was painted on the front of the faceplate. Is this
possible? Was this possibly an early HQ-110A and they used the old stock
HQ-110 faceplate, just ground off the old markings and painted them with
the new logo? That's sure what it looks like. BTW, the serial number is
26508054.
