Yes, of course SSB is it's own kind of modulation, although it is a
"modification, or variation" of AM, and therefore, I usually think of them
as capabilities of basically the same circuit. After all, take yr generic AM
design, and with the addition of a handful of additional components, you
have SSB capability. To get from there to, say, FM, takes some radical
re-designing of the receiver circuits.
