By "diode load" set of terminals do you mean that
there are diodes connected across the antenna
terminals?  If so, these need to be removed because
they can cause intermod which may be the reason that
you are hearing the local AM station.  These were
often put on receivers to protect the input from
nearby high powered transmitters.  However, they can
cause all sorts of problems on receive.
