Ham Radio, computer and electronics enthusiasts from several Mid- western
states will converge on Exposition Gardens Fairgrounds in Peoria for
Illinois’ largest “HAMFEST” on September 19-21, 2014. For over 50 years
the “Peoria SUPERFEST” sponsored by the Peoria-Area Amateur Radio Club, the
Annual “SUPERFEST” has provided the perfect venue in the form of two
large buildings where commercial vendors starting at 8:00AM Saturday
through 2:00PM on Sunday will offer new and used amateur radios and
accessories, computer equipment, peripherals, software and electronic
components and a large outdoor open-air Flea Market which begins at 6 AM
Saturday, September 20, and runs through 2 PM Sunday, September 21. The
flea market will host private sellers with a wide assortment of almost
anything electronic.

This year, the Peoria Superfest will host Gordon West, WA6NOB. It’s more
than likely that there is not a Ham radio operator alive who has not heard
of the name “Gordon West” or his call sign WB6NOA. It’s been said, Gordo
(as he prefers) is the leading ham radio educator in the USA today! Gordo
has been teaching radio and electronics for more than 40 years. His fun
approach to the material helps make learning a pleasure and easy to recall
for testing. He is a convention speaker, Dx’er, teacher and author. Gordo
obtained his first ticket at age 15 and has been involved in ham radio for
nearly 5 decades. Those that have seen the Gordon West 30 foot booth at
major exhibits and arenas, see first-hand the quality. Gordon will be
presenting his "Train the Trainer" session at the Peoria Red Cross starting
at 9:00AM, Sept 19th. Gordon will be providing his teaching tips and
tricks during this all day session. If you are currently teaching an
Amateur Radio Course, a VE , VEC or an Elmer, this training is for you!!
This training is free and lunch is included. At 6:00PM on Friday, the 19th,
we will meet at the Lariat Club for a dinner with Gordon. Please call or
email Fritz if you are coming to both the class and the dinner.. (

Forums will be conducted on Saturday, September, 20 in the Ameren-Cilco
Building. At 8:30 the forums start with Tom Cicioria discussing the
HR4969 bill. In June, 2014 with Congressman Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) as the
sponsor and Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-2) as co-sponsor, *HR 4969 – the
“Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014″* - was introduced into the 113th
Congress. This bipartisan effort would direct the FCC to extend the
“reasonable accommodation” provisions for Amateur Radio antennas to include
all types of land-use regulation, including deed restrictions and
restrictive covenants.

At 9:30 Mike Levine of the Salvation Army will discuss SATERN
communication, at 10:00AM a panel discussion on the new Yaesu Fusion
Repeater system. Chris Wilson, National Sales Director for Yaesu Amateur
Radio Products will be here as well as current Fusion Repeater Owners to
discuss implementation experiences. At 11:00AM Gordon West, “State of the
Union Address” Gordon is a tremendous speaker so this session should be
great. At 12:30 Mark Allen of Rohn Tower will discuss the interaction of
ARES/EMA, at 1:00PM, John Coker will give a scanner update. Please see the
website for more information.
are being set up and will be available on the www.w9uvi.org website in the
near future.

Examinations for FCC ham licenses will be conducted on Saturday, September
21, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM in the Photography Building. Information on
how to become a Ham Radio Operator and on the next Ham Radio class will
also be available.

On Sunday, September 22 a high altitude balloon will be launched from
Exposition Gardens at approximately 11:00AM. The balloon will contain a
variety of ham radio equipment, including a high altitude GPS, Automatic
Packet Reporting System (APRS) for tracking the balloon, a UHF simplex
repeater and a 40 meter CW beacon. High definition still and video cameras
will be part of the payload.

Also on Sunday, September 22, there will be a Go-Kit competition at 9:00AM
in the Youth Building for those amateur radio operators that have built
portable radio stations that are used during emergency situations such as
tornadoes and floods. These Go-Kits are deployed where needed to provide
communications to served agencies such as the Red Cross and other groups
that aid disaster recovery efforts.

Additionally, Rohn Tower of Peoria is donating a 30 foot antenna tower to
be given away during a special raffle with the winner to be drawn at 1:00PM
on Sunday. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the General Wayne
A. Downing Home for Veterans located in Peoria. Winner can pick up the
tower at Superfest.

Food service is available onsite during Superfest hours of operation.

All events are open to the public. Children under 12 will be admitted free
when accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets, good for the weekend, at $7
