[Ham-Mac] garbage when not receiving a station

Dick N5XRD,

I assume you are talking about fldigi and there are several ways to reduce the noise hits.  One is to use the RF Gain control on you rig and the other is to advance the fldigi’s squelch control.

You need to use your TS-590SG’s IF Filter and bandwidth controls in conjunction with the fldigi QSY button. Set the band width controls to reduce signals around your sweet spot. If you see a signal you want to work, center it to your defined sweet spot, then push the IF filter. This will cut out all noise outside your defined bandwidth. 

There is no easy answer to your question.  The TS-590 has excellent filters. Learn to use them.
