If it were me, I'd buy a Elecraft KX3, but it's only 10 watts unless you buy the optional 100 watt amp. I think there is a battery pack for it (KX3) too, (not for the amp).
Check it out here: <http://www.elecraft.com/KX3/kx3.htm>. I believe the price is around $800 or $900, might be wrong, but I think I'm close.
The KX3 is becoming very popular especially among the portable and low power folks. It's a DSP rig quite advanced. The rx is on top of Sherwoods receiver test page. <http://www.sherweng.com/table.html>
BTW, all the Elecraft gear is Mac supported with their free utilities, it just works.
Sounds like a fun trip.

I will be taking along a high-end laptop anyway, but I hear that the Flex doesn't work as well with laptops as it does with a desktop. I'll probably take both an ATAS 120 and a simple dipole, since I'm not sure how the rigging will be (I do have the captain's permission). The SDR intrigues me because of its ability to let me find signals but I'm not sure I can learn fast enough before I go in October. Any recommendations?? (It's a US-flag ship so I won't have to get a new call.. yea!!)
