He said he was using the 'z' option (you can see it listed in his args). The 'v' just causes tar to be verbose about it's extraction.
however, normal unit tar does not unzip as well as extract, only GNU tar does that. I do note that tar on OSX lists 'z' as an option to compress, therefore I would have expected it to decompress on extraction.

I just took the unzipped copy from the site.
