You probably need to read the following documents first:

http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/AppNotes/AN_134_FTDI_Drivers_Installation_Guide_for_MAC_OSX.pdf

http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/TechnicalNotes/TN_105%20Adding%20Support%20for%20New%20FTDI%20Devices%20to%20Mac%20Driver.pdf

As I recall, at least for some devices, the /dev names for the FTDI drivers
require a very specific format/name length in order to function properly.
When I upgraded from SL to Lion, my Navigator drivers no longer worked.
However, a bit of experimentation revealed the the problem was related to
the correct name length. For example, the Navigator's CAT port is named
tty.NavCAT____^_00000000A (or cu.NavCAT____^_00000000A) If you shorten
that by a character or lengthen that by a character, it doesn't work.

All of this can be defined in the FTDI driver's plist, as annotated in the
TN-105 document linked above. I can't speak for the settings on the USB
Interface III, but hopefully this will help you a bit.
