Boog N4CTF,

You have received good recommendations from several. As many of us have learned ham radio has nothing to do with need. It is a hobby based on pure want and how much money you are willing to spend.

You don't need a Mac but many of us like and use Mac's for daily use and have integrated the computer to our hobby. My advise is to buy the Mac you like and want to use. Since you already have a Ten-Tec Pegasus, use it to try out the digital modes. Fldigi with the companion flrig would fine with your headless Pegasus. BTW, fldigi has built-on Logbook that should hold you until you decide what logging program best fits what you want to do. W1HKJ's fldigi will get you started with the exception of SSTV.

I suggest you join the Linux Yahoo Group at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linuxham/> and read up on fldigi and flrig at <http://www.w1hkj.com/>. The unique thing about W1HKJ's fldigi is the same software runs on Window, Linux and Mac OS X.

Have fun shopping for the new Mac. Your going to like it and there are many very good ham radio related applications.
