[Ham-Mac] Manual Deletion of Older OS X Time Machine Backups

I needed to reconfigure the drive I used for Time Machine several months ago. I just reformatted it and immediately ran a time machine backup.
I made a backup installation DVD of Lion and am very happy that I did. I was deleting some old stuff (PPC binaries, etc.) and unfortunately deleted /private (which you only see from a command-line terminal, not the GUI, but actually /etc, /tmp and /var are symlinks to /private/etc, /private/tmp and /private/var). After a few appropriate curses I booted from the DVD and the first option it offered was to restore everything from Time Machine. In about 2 hours I was back in business. I learned a lesson there and have come to really appreciate Time Machine!
