Further you need a fairly modern Mac as well:
• Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
• Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
• iTunes 10.1 or later (free download fromwww.itunes.com/download)
• iTunes Store account
• Internet access
I have sold a few Macs to folks who had been given or bought new iPad, Ipods etc.
OT: If you want a standalone book reader, the Kindle is the answer.
