There's an interesting project getting started with some good folks behind it. Letters.app is meant as an open-source alternative to Mac Mail. If you are looking for something to piggyback onto, but without implementing all the stuff that goes with a mail program, this might be a project for you to join. The project will have a plugin architecture, so in theory all you'd have to do is write the plugin.
