The native drive format for Intel Macs is GUID, while the PPC Macs used Apple Partition Map (APM).

The statement about booting the different machines is not true...it's true that you can't *install* an Intel version of Mac OS X on an APM-formatted drive, but if you *clone* the Intel system from the GUID drive to an APM-formatted one, it will boot the Intel Mac just fine.

This is far too detailed and *way* off topic for this list, but I have an APM-formatted external hard drive that has two partitions, one for booting Intel Macs and one for booting PPC Macs; I use it for servicing customers' machines.
