Good responses about rsync vs TM. I now have more respect for TM and
may try it again.
There are drawbacks with both - like the work around required to keep
TM from making an unnecessary whole new backup from that Dave Anderson
talked about.
I don't like the extra layer that TM places between me and the files.
But that is my experience talking (started in 1980 in charge of
backups at Randolph-Macon College). (Most recently: 11 years with a
Navy contract - I used rsync which was perfect for the group of
engineers that frequently would accidentally delete a needed file.
Only once or twice did I have to restore a whole disk - they used top-
of-the-line h/w for disk drives which would run for years w/o a crash.)
pro: Rsync has the wonderful ability to detect changes in a particular
file, and only sending to the destination the changes, not the whole
file.
con: But rsync is not a tinker-proof system, and has a learning curve
( at least for some features ) which is a downside for lots of users.
Us tinkerers are happy to take the risk, but we do have to be careful
to check that it is working as we want it to.
