I believe it went something like this:  They posted a link to get a free key 
via email with which to register the product.  Not having expected to really 
have this free promotional, they didn't have the capacity to handle the 
volume of requests, so they shutdown most of their site and put up links to 
an unlocked version of their products.  If you got the free key, generally by 
continually refreshing, they have extended the date to Nov. 30th to use the 
key to register a product.

I'm not sure if just having the unlocked version is enough to register the 
product and be completely legal.  Their intent in posting the unlocked 
versions, as I saw it, was to reduce the load on their servers and allow 
people who got a key to start using the product quickly, even though they 
couldn't register it then due to the flooding of their site.
