[Ham-Mac] Editing html

If this is off topic, please respond to me privately:

Does anyone write simple html on their mac?  In the windows environment any .htm document will open as a page when viewed.  I know, I know, I'm a dummy ... but so far I am not seeing the trick.  In order to write my own eBay ads, I need to do this.  Does Tiger block this as a natural defense?  Or is the unix shell preventing the html read?
