Good point Chris. I would agree. FTDI Chipset would be my second  
choice. I have had great success with your ICOM CI-V interface.
http://www.blackcatsystems.com/usbciv/  Which uses the FTDI chipset.

However, it not clear how you can tell whether a particular vendor or  
USB to Serial is using FTDI chipset or not.  I "think"??? you can tell  
when you plug it in to USB and use built-in System Profiler (in  
Utilities Folder) to investigate USB buses and validate chipset details.
