Hi Fred,
As I recall the Yaesu FT 8000, while it is packet ready, doesn't have
a TNC inside it.
So here is what you will need to get the Yaesu FT 8000 on to packet
radio at 1200 bps.
1) USB to Serial converter... I recommend the Keyspan Serial
converters as they have the best drivers.

2) A 1200bps TNC. Several to choose from here but Kantronics is
probably one of the best and most reliable.

3) Cable to connect (#1) to (#2) aka... a serial cable.
Standard DB9 to DB 25 Modem cable
Eg...

4) Cable to connect TNC (#2) to your (Yaesu FT 8000) which you need to
wire up yourself using specs from TNC and the Radio data port. You can
get a kit which provides parts except the data port on the back of the
radio but that last part should have come with your Yaesu FT 8000.

Hope this helps!

BTW... It's not a MacBook G5 but rather PowerBook G5. MacBooks have
Intel Processors. PowerBooks and iBooks have PowerPC processors.
Regardless all models need the same gear to be on AX.25 Amateur packet
radio.
