Chris;
He is trying to determine if the problem is hardware of the OS. By
booting from a disk that is certain to not have any corruptions then
it is far easier to tell. If the problem continues when booting from
the System disk, then it is hardware. Otherwise you might want to
consider cleaning the disk and installing a fresh OS. Even with MacOS
X's UNIX underpinnings, it is fairly easy to get a system extension
(KEXT) or preference that messes things up at a very low level.
