The battery certainly could explain the starting problem and clock  
reset.  Easy check, pull the cover off (I think it requires allen  
wrenches, not torx, but my mind could be fuzzy) and check the battery  
voltage.  It's a little 3.6v battery as I recall, easy mail order  
from macsales.com if you need one, cheap easy fix if that is the  
problem!  I've seen them go bad in a couple years, while others last  
many years!
