Hello,
Before you bin the unit. Try restarting the computer, using the crash 
restart button, press for a few seconds, and probably hidden on the back 
edge of the computer....if that works, then most it is most likely, that the 
internal lithium ? battery is dead, and needs replacing, this battery keeps 
all the little internal programs running....not very expensive to buy, but 
more than likely soldered in.....I hope this may help your dad....sincerely,
