[Ham-Mac] Re: [CQ-Contest] iCal Contesting Calendar

Climbing on soapbox, loading both barrels...

Take a look at the destination address(es) next time you respond to
an email. You might have noticed that the emails were going to both
the Ham-Mac list AND the CQ Contest list. The latter is definitely
NOT Mac-only.

I have been a Mac user since February of 1984, and have owned many
Macintosh computers. I develop Mac software, and have worked for
Apple as an architect. The Mac is not about putting others down, but
rather being a leader. And being a leader means we do excellent
things ahead of others. iCal is an excellent program, and is supposed
to be based on standards, specifically the iCalendar standard. It is
definitely not the best-in-class calendar program. Outlook (and its
brother Entourage) has features that iCal won't have until Leopard
comes out. Leadership? Well, maybe not in this case. Not yet anyways.

The real point is that Anthony has done a lot of work crafting a
great ham contest calendar. Since iCal is based on the iCalendar
standard, the calendar file _should_ be readable on any program that
understands that standard. This is a major plus for us Mac users,
since we can contribute things back to the ham community, taking a
leadership role in yet another area. As a long time Mac user,
developer, and ham contester, I _do_ care that the calendar is cross-
platform compatible. If it isn't (which appears to be the case), I'd
like to find out why and perhaps get the appropriate software vendor
to make it so.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is lost in the venom of the platform wars
that ended long ago.

off soapbox...
