The FTDI devices are great, but I have never had a report of a kernel
panic with the correct Keyspan driver loaded - and I have 8 of them
connected at all times :)
In hundreds of USB/Serial support emails - not one can be traced to
the Keyspan devices.
There have been one or two bad pieces of hardware (in both products)
of course, and several cabling errors and incorrect drivers loaded -
but there is nothing wrong with the Keyspan devices or drivers as far
as I know.
The biggest headache for me was the failure of the FTDI drivers to
properly enumerate on system startup forcing everyone to unplug and
re-plug the device after each startup. FTDI finally did fix this
problem earlier this year.
I guess as in all things YMMV, but I would have to say that properly
installed with the correct drivers and cabling - both the FTDI and
Keyspan chipsets work flawlessly.
