[Ham-Mac] problem here

If you have to disable sleep to make it work then you are just
masking another problem.

Sometimes it takes some fine tuning to get Sleep to work all the time
but it can be done.

I have successfully used Sleep on all seven of my last Macs, but
sometimes you have to dig into it to find the problem if it is not
working.

At any rate, all your work fixed the problem at some point so, enjoy!
