Since the cable and SL-1 worked with the G5, I am beginning to suspect your
new iMac.  It may have a dead sound card output.

Do the test I suggested with cocoaModem and listen on something plugged into
the iMac's output port.  Something to do while waiting for the SL-1 to be
replaced.
