[Ham-Mac] "You cannot open this application ... because it is not suppotrted on this system"

Don't forget that you could try both.  However, for most Ham uses I
think Parallels is a great way to go, especially if you are using some
OSX programs like MacloggerDX.

As far as serial ports go, it does support USB 1 at this stage and
that is all most of us need for radio interfaces, etc.

I am able to use my Iogear USB/Serial adaptor with no problems to hook
up to my Delrome Earthmate GPS unit so I don't see why it won't work
with other similar devices.
