Dick,
I use them both. I assume by "dotMac" you are referring to the
Backup program that Apple offers with a dot Mac account.
I use it for a few hundred meg of critical files that I want to back
up to my iDisk and also for User Directory and incrementals that I
back up to an external drive.
I use SuperDuper for keeping a complete bootable clone in a Backup
partition on my external drive and use the "Smart Update" feature to
keep it up to date.
Nothing like having a complete clone ready to boot into if you do an
update or screw something up and want to go back and start over. Or,
if you want to Option boot from the clone to perform maintenance on
your primary boot drive.
I also use SuperDuper to back up to an encrypted disk image that I
store on a second external off site. Then once a month I use Smart
Update to update that.
A nice feature of the Intel Mac's is that you don't have to have a
Firewire drive to be able to boot from it. If you want to save a few
bucks you can watch for good deals on USB externals for backups.
