Lon,
If you want to be sure that permitions are not the problem you can  
activate the "root" account in the "NetInfo Manager" application  
(Utilities folder).
  Then open the Terminal, you should be located in your home folder,  
if not type:

cd ~  (to go to home folder)

now type:

  su  (to log as root)

you will be asked for the root password.
then type:

cd .Trash

finaly type:

rm *  (this removes all files in the folder you are located)

When finished you should disable the root account.
