Yes, of course there is. But, the way I see it, the chance that the  
internal drive will go south at the same time as the external drive  
is low enough that I don't worry too much about it. The bigger risk  
is theft of both drives, fire, flood, or some other disaster that  
takes out both drives. If you want to be *really* safe, you need to  
keep backups off-site.
Regarding CD-R(W) and DVD-R(W) media, I have had both types go bad on  
me, so YMMV, as always.
