[Ham-Mac] backups

When I was in the Windoze world, I used tape backup and thankfully  
never had a crash requiring backup.

I have been in the real (Mac) world for a year and a half now, with a  
G4 powerbook.  My wife's iMac G5 is networked with my machine.  Both  
running Tiger.

I have a .Mac account and use Backup to do weekly backups of both  
machines to a Western Digital external drive which is connected by a  
USB setup.  Before you start screaming "USB!!!!", may I say that the  
area computer shops did not have Firewire external drives in stock  
when I was able to get to them (I live in a rural area) and so took  
what they had.  I am able to backup fine using Backup, as far as I know.

My question is this:  Am I missing something obvious by not using a  
different program?
