David,

Go to your Applications Folder, then open your Utilities folder and launch
the application called Disk Utility.  Let it run until your hard drive(s)
are displayed on the left. Select your primary drive with the mouse and then
CLICK on the button that says Repair Disk Permissions.   Let the Disk
Utility do its thing.
