If you have an OS X operating system earlier than 10.4, that is the  
standard. In 10.4, the default graphic document format is .png.

.png is Portable Network Graphics, a standard file format approved by  
the World Wide Web consortium to replace the GIF file format, which  
has always had patent issues. PNG is patent and license-free.
