I'm using a Keyspan USB-Serial adapter, which works perfectly with my 
FT-8800 (from a PC laptop with USB-1 only), when that rig would not 
work with the built-in serial port of the laptop (it could read but 
not write).  It's a fairly recent Keyspan adapter, I don't know if 
the older ones are the same.

I don't know if there's a difference with using that adapter with a 
PC versus a Mac, or using it on a USB-1 port versus a USB-2 port.
