This can be true, but not 100 per cent of the time. If the Mac has  
had a logic board replacement, the information will not be there or  
will be wrong (depending on the source of the replacement part).

In the case of a laptop, a processor module replacement will change  
the info (I have a G3 Pismo laptop, and the serial number in Apple  
System Profiler is different from the serial number on the bottom of  
the computer, because I replaced the processor module with a used  
unit, not from Apple).
