Problem solved!

Jan you and I had the same idea and it was correct: for the audio in 
on ACC2 to be active, the rig has to be keyed via Pin 9 on ACC2. Once 
I switched keying to that pin, all worked fine.

Interesting that there is no mention of this in the 570's manual. All 
it says is "connect to TNC or MCP transmit/receive switching pin for 
digital operation". It is also good to note that keying via Pin 9 
mutes the mike input.
