Bad news John
This is a 'feature' of the mono screen on the 250. It is supposedly  
due to gradual seepage of air into the the lcd matrix - and of course  
works from the outside in.
I don't know of any source of replacement lcds and any 'old stock'  
are likely to have the same problem.
Best suggestion is to look for a colour Duo and cannibalize the 250  
for memory etc to make it work. Ideal replacement is a 2300 with the  
power PC processor - as it will support more RAM and also can be  
fitted with any of the colour or Mono screens
